Step 1: Vacuum the floor. If you sweep the floor, you are actually pushing the dirt around and into the crevices. Vacuuming the tile helps lift dirt up and out of the grout.

Step 2: Mop the floor with a natural cleaning solution. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, bleach, or vinegar, as these can all damage the tile or deteriorate the grout. It is important to mop first before you clean the grout and change the water often.

Step 3: Dry the tile with a towel before proceeding to the next step. What you don’t want is for all of the dirt you just removed from the surface of the tile to settle into the porous grout. Dry the tile before it has a chance to air dry. Now you’re ready to start working on the grout.

Step 4: Apply your grout cleaning solution. We recommend making a paste with ½ cup baking soda, 1/3 cup hydrogen peroxide, and 1 teaspoon of clear dish soap. Apply the solution to your grout and let it sit for 15 minutes. The hydrogen peroxide will act as a gentle bleaching agent to help remove stains.

Step 5: Scrub your grout with an electric brush. An old electric toothbrush will work.

Step 6: Rinse the solution from the grout and dry the tile as you go. At this point in the process we use a spinner that rinses the floor at a velocity of 1800 psi and a temperature of approximately 220 degrees. You can simulate this by boiling water to rinse the tile. You will need to have towels on hand and dry the tile as you go. If you rinse the tile and allow the dirty water to dry on the grout again, you will have to start the grout cleaning process over again.

Step 7: If you are satisfied with the results of your cleaning process, apply a grout sealant to keep the grout clean longer.
